What Are Steel Piers?
When foundation settlement issues and sinking occurs, foundation specialists will commonly use steel piers, also known as push piers, as a solution for this very common foundation problem. Dry soil can cause shrinking over time, which will lead to a gradual loss of foundation support. Poorly compacted soils like those found in Louisiana, Texas & Arkansas will become compacted by the weight of the structures above it, causing a downward slope to the structure above the surface. In these extreme cases, it would be recommended to use steel push piers to correct the height, which is a proven underpinning method for foundation repair.
The reinforced steel push piers provide a two-fold system that includes driving the steel pilings into the weight bearing stratum so the structure can support the new piers. Once the deep part of the soil is reached, a hydraulic lift uses the steel piers to lift the foundation back up and gain back the lost elevation, thus restoring the value of your home or commercial property by making the foundation safe and stable again.
There are four main steps that we follow when we install steel piers underneath a residential or commercial structure:
- The ground will first be excavated before the installation of the piers around the foundation
- The foundation bracket will then be mounted for the piering system to be installed
- The installation of the steel push piers will occur around the perimeter
- The weight of the structure will be finally transferred to the steel piers, adding further reinforcement and correction
